I remember looking at graffiti carved into the actual stone at Freiburg cathedral in Germany. It was dated to the 1700s.
For shame! (I’d love to see the Norse graffiti up at Maes Howe in the Orkneys–a bunch of Vikings holed up in a 2000 year old stone building complex for a while, and scrawled runic inscriptions on the walls there.)
